Prepaid Meter Refund Nigeria: Check Your MAP Tokens (2026)
Quick Answer
If you paid upfront for a meter under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme, check your DisCo’s official refund portal using your meter or account number. Eligible prepaid customers receive electricity-credit tokens, not a cash payout. Retrieve unused tokens, follow your DisCo’s loading instructions and keep a record of the credits. If your record or token is missing, ask the DisCo to reconcile your MAP payment and reimbursement history.
You paid for a prepaid meter, but have you checked whether your electricity company has issued the repayment credits? A missing SMS can leave you unaware of a refund token that is already available to retrieve.
This guide takes you from finding the correct official portal to loading your token and documenting a missing-credit complaint. It covers reimbursement of a meter bought under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme. A failed electricity purchase, an estimated-billing adjustment and a free-meter application are different issues.
Source and portal check: 23 October 2026. Power.ng does not issue refund tokens or collect meter numbers. Enter your details only on your provider’s official service.
Official MAP refund portals: start with your DisCo
Use the electricity company shown on your bill or token receipt. These links were checked against the providers’ official pages; a portal being temporarily unavailable does not establish that you are ineligible.
| Electricity company | Official refund route | What to have ready |
|---|---|---|
| Ikeja Electric | MAP refund lookup | Your prepaid meter number |
| Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC/EKEDP) | MAP refund-token portal, linked from Eko’s metering page | Your meter number or nine-digit Eko account number |
| Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) | MAP refund portal, linked from AEDC’s refund guide | Your meter number |
| Another DisCo or a state distribution subsidiary | Start at the official website printed on your bill; ask customer care for its MAP reimbursement channel | Your account number, meter number and purchase receipt |
This is a list of verified retrieval routes, not a claim that only three companies reimburse customers. Do not try your meter on every provider’s portal: the relevant company needs to reconcile its own customer records.
Who is entitled to a prepaid meter refund?
NERC’s metering FAQs explain that customers who paid for meters under MAP recover the cost through energy credits over the approved period. Before making a claim, find the document showing how your meter was obtained.
| Your situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| You have a MAP meter purchase receipt | Match it to your electricity account and check the refund record |
| Your landlord or a former occupant paid | Ask for the purchase and account history before assuming who should receive the benefit |
| Your meter was supplied free under DISREP or another programme | Do not assume there is a paid MAP cost to reimburse |
| You paid someone but have no official receipt | Ask the DisCo to verify whether the payment was recorded as a MAP purchase |
| You paid for an electricity token that never arrived | Raise a vending/payment complaint with the seller; this is not a MAP meter-cost claim |
If you are still choosing a metering route, read our free prepaid meter guide and MAP application guide.
What changed in the 2026 MAP reimbursement order?
NERC’s amended order, effective 1 March 2026, separates two repayment streams:
- Regular reimbursement: the 120-month repayment schedule continues. Prepaid credits are converted to energy at the customer’s prevailing tariff.
- Catch-up reimbursement: amounts under-reimbursed as at 31 December 2025 are spread over 12 equal instalments beginning in March 2026. Affected prepaid customers receive an additional token alongside their regular reimbursement.
The order requires refund communications to show the original meter cost, cumulative reimbursement and outstanding balance. It also says the credits must not be used to offset legacy debts.
The 12-month provision is not a promise to repay everyone’s whole meter cost within one year. Ask for your account’s statement rather than estimating your entitlement from a social-media headline.
The practical reason to check now is that providers are actively issuing credits. Eko’s metering announcement describes refund-token disbursements and cumulative refund information as of 10 September 2026. The programme is not a Christmas bonus or a limited-time giveaway.
Step 1: Match the meter, account and payment
Gather these before opening a complaint:
- A recent electricity receipt showing the serving company and meter number.
- Your customer/account number, where available.
- The original MAP payment receipt or transaction evidence.
- The installation record, if you have it.
- The phone number and email currently registered to the electricity account.
Check each digit rather than relying on a saved contact or an old receipt. If the meter was replaced, preserve both the old and new numbers and ask the DisCo to confirm how the reimbursement record was transferred.
Step 2: Retrieve and save the refund details
Open the correct portal from the table above and submit the identifier it requests. Compare the returned details with your own records before using a token. Save a private screenshot or download, including the refund period, value and any transaction reference shown.
Ikeja Electric’s instructions say its portal provides issued tokens even if an SMS or email was missed. It also directs customers with outdated contact details to customer care. AEDC similarly allows customers to check their status and access tokens through its official refund service.
If the page returns no record, screenshot the exact message and date. “No record found” alone does not tell you whether the issue is eligibility, an incorrect number, an account migration or a record that needs correction.
Step 3: Load the token and confirm the credit
Follow the instructions issued for your meter and provider:
- Note the starting balance and the token’s refund period.
- Confirm that the token belongs to this meter.
- Enter all 20 digits on the keypad or customer interface unit (CIU), then press Enter as instructed.
- Record the acceptance message and the resulting balance.
- Mark that token as used in your records.
For multiple unused tokens, Ikeja instructs customers to load the oldest first. Follow your own DisCo’s sequence where it supplies different instructions. A token being accepted and electricity being available are separate matters: if credit increases but your house remains dark, use our token accepted but no electricity guide.
Do not open the meter, remove its seals or attempt electrical repairs to load a refund. A damaged or non-communicating CIU needs the provider’s model-specific guidance.
Missing or rejected MAP token? Use this troubleshooting table
| What you see | What to check | What to request if unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| No SMS or email | Official portal and registered contact details | Updated contact information and the issued-token history |
| Meter not found | Correct DisCo, exact identifier, old versus replacement meter | Reconciliation of the purchase, account and meter records |
| Token rejected or invalid | All digits, meter match, previous use and required loading order | Investigation of the specific token and error message |
| A token appears twice in your records | Refund period and token number, not just the message date | Confirmation whether this is a duplicate notification |
| Naira value or units seem wrong | The provider’s repayment statement and conversion details | A written calculation and reimbursement history |
| Credit appears but the house has no power | Whether neighbours have supply and the meter’s displayed status | Supply or meter-fault investigation, separate from the refund |
For a persistent rejection, include the refund period and exact display message in your complaint. Our prepaid meter token rejection guide provides broader troubleshooting; always confirm any code or reset procedure with the DisCo for your specific model.
Track what was issued and what you actually loaded
Keep a small record so a repeated message does not look like a new refund. Store full token numbers privately; the last few digits are enough for your working checklist.
| Refund period | Naira credit shown | kWh issued | Token reference | Loaded on | Complaint reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [month/year] | [amount] | [units] | [last four digits] | [date or unused] | [if needed] |
For illustration, if a statement shows a meter cost of ₦120,000 and cumulative reimbursement of ₦9,000, the remaining cost is ₦111,000. These are invented bookkeeping figures, not a tariff quote or an estimate of your entitlement. Keep “issued” and “loaded” separate when reconciling the statement.
If credited units load correctly but disappear unusually quickly, investigate consumption separately with our prepaid units finishing fast guide.
How to complain about missing MAP credits
Start with a written request to your serving DisCo or distribution subsidiary. Use its official refund-support channel or customer-care office and ask for a ticket number.
- Ikeja: its refund page directs unresolved token issues to [email protected], including the meter number and refund period.
- AEDC: its official guide directs missing-refund enquiries to [email protected], with evidence of MAP payment.
- Eko: use the customer-care details displayed on its official refund portal and quote the affected account and refund period.
You can adapt this message:
Subject: MAP meter-cost reimbursement reconciliation — account [number]
I paid for a MAP meter on [date]. My account number is [number] and my current meter number is [number]. I attach the payment evidence and the refund-portal result dated [date]. Please confirm my eligibility, original recorded meter cost, reimbursement history, outstanding balance and any unused tokens. The specific problem is [missing period / no record / rejected token and exact message]. Please provide a complaint reference and the next action.
Share payment evidence through official support channels, with unrelated bank transactions redacted. Never provide a bank PIN, card security code or banking OTP to retrieve an electricity refund.
If the complaint remains unresolved, check which regulator now handles your area. NERC explains that complaints in transitioned state markets proceed from the local DisCo/SubCo to the state regulator. Use the official state-regulator directory and NERC’s transition guidance. Where NERC retains responsibility, follow its consumer complaint procedure. Our electricity billing dispute guide helps you organise the evidence.
Before you leave the portal
Save the issued-token history, mark the tokens you successfully loaded and record any unresolved period. Your next action should be clear: load an unused credit, correct the account details or send a specific reconciliation request. That is more useful than repeatedly refreshing the page or paying someone to “unlock” a refund.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who qualifies for a MAP prepaid meter refund?
Customers who paid for a meter under the MAP scheme should have the meter cost reimbursed through energy credits over the approved period. Ask your DisCo to confirm the payment, meter and account records. Receiving a free meter does not create a MAP purchase-cost refund.
How do I check my MAP refund token?
Use the official refund page for your DisCo. Ikeja accepts your meter number; Eko accepts its meter or account number. On AEDC’s official portal, follow the requested identifiers. Check the returned meter details and refund period before loading any token.
Is the MAP refund cash or free electricity?
For eligible prepaid customers it is electricity credit returned against a meter purchase, rather than a cash payment or a general promotional bonus. You still pay for electricity beyond the credited units.
Does the 2026 order mean my whole meter cost is repaid in one year?
No. The regular reimbursement schedule is 120 months. The separate 12-month catch-up starting in March 2026 concerns amounts under-reimbursed by 31 December 2025, not every customer’s entire remaining meter cost.
What if my MAP refund token is rejected?
Check the meter number, all 20 digits, whether the token was already used and your DisCo’s instructions for older unused tokens. Record the exact error and refund period. Ask the issuing DisCo to investigate; do not buy a replacement refund token or enter unverified reset codes.
What should I do if I paid for a meter but my refund record is missing?
Send a written reconciliation request to your DisCo with the MAP receipt, meter and account numbers, installation details and a screenshot of the portal result. Keep the complaint reference. If unresolved, check the appropriate state regulator or NERC complaint route for your service area.
